Xiaoshan: A Residential Design by Huangming Lin

Creating a Harmonious Connection with Nature

Inspired by the beauty of natural forms and textures, Huangming Lin's Xiaoshan design aims to evoke a sense of harmony and connection with nature. This residential project showcases the designer's attention to detail and his ability to transform everyday experiences into a belief in the power of design.

As a family embarks on a new chapter in life, their home should be a place that sparks imagination and creativity. Xiaoshan breaks free from the traditional boundaries of a residential space by incorporating bionic organic curves that blur the lines between different areas. The design seamlessly integrates light food strips that cater to the user's habits, creating a natural flow between various life scenes.

The use of hand-scraped paint with carefully selected texture furniture and owner's collections adds a unique touch to the space. The round lines and exclusive custom hairline copper metal elements further enhance the overall aesthetic. Design lamps are thoughtfully chosen to complement the design and create a harmonious ambiance.

The realization of Xiaoshan involves the use of shadow wood veneer, hairline bronze stainless steel, brown marble, and artistic hand-scraped paint. The curved ceiling, combined with strategically placed air outlets and wall lights, creates a subtle sense of movement as one navigates through the space. The dining area lighting is customized to mimic the organic forms found in nature, further enhancing the connection between the design and its surroundings.

This residential project spans 380 square meters and is located in Hangzhou. The design process began in May 2019 and was completed in August 2020. Throughout the project, the design team, which includes Huangming Lin, Shihhung Chen, Chiwei Lee, and Nienchun Wei, faced various challenges. The most significant hurdle was achieving the perfect balance between the appropriate curve ratio and avoiding excessive design elements. The construction process required on-site workers to hand-make the specially customized curved ceilings, resulting in a costly and time-consuming endeavor. Additionally, the texture of the hand-scraped paint required multiple attempts to achieve the desired effect. However, the team's dedication and perseverance ultimately led to a successful outcome.

Xiaoshan showcases the designer's ability to create a space that is not only visually stunning but also functional and inviting. The winding ceiling lines add a sense of vitality and guide visitors through the different functional areas of the home. The spacious living room, with its versatile seating options, can accommodate various lifestyles, whether it's a cozy family gathering or a lively party. Despite being located in a high-rise apartment, the design maintains a sense of openness and maximizes the available height. The carefully selected hand-scraped paint extends from the walls to the ceiling, capturing and reflecting natural light, and enhancing the overall texture and warmth of the space.

The Xiaoshan design by Huangming Lin is a testament to the power of thoughtful and innovative design. By incorporating elements inspired by nature, the project creates a harmonious connection between the residents and their environment. This unique residential design has been recognized for its excellence and creativity, receiving the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2021. It is a true testament to the designer's ability to blend art, science, and technology to create spaces that enhance the quality of life.
